Electricty Flashcards
What is the E.M.F of a cell?
The energy in joules given to each coulomb of charge which passes through the cell.
What is the p.d between 2 points in a circuit
Measure of the electrical energy transferred by every coulomb of charge as it passes between the two points
What is an ideal circuit
It has zero internal resistance and produces a constant e.m.f
What is an open circuit
It has infinite resistance and no current flows
What is a short circuit
This is when there aren’t any resistors e.g R=0. However there is internal resistance in the power supply
What is a capacitor
An electronic device that can store charge and energy in a DC circuit
What is a current
A flow of charge (electrons)
What is doping
The adding of impurities to pure silicon to produce n-type or p-type silicon
What is an insulator
A material that blocks the flow of electricity
What is an LED
A light-emitting diode; a semiconductor device that gives out photons when current passes through it
What is a semiconductor
A material that will conduct under certain conditions; the gap between the valance band and them conduction band is much narrower than in insulators
What is a solar cell
A semiconductor device that produces voltage when photons enter the semiconductor junction
Conductors have _____ resistance
Low
Insulators have ____ resistance
High
What is the effect called when solar cells use the p and n bonding layer to create a voltage
Photovoltaic effect
