electricity vocab 1 Flashcards
Energy
power derived from the utilization of physical or chemical resources, especially to provide light and heat or to work machines.
Chemical energy
the induction of an electromotive force by the motion of a conductor across a magnetic field or by a change in magnetic flux in a magnetic field.
Thermocouple
temperature difference.
Electromagnet
a soft metal core made into a magnet by the passage of electric current through a coil surrounding it.
Commutator
current flows as direct current.
Brushes
a bundle of flexible wires or thin plates of metal, used to conduct an electrical current to or from the commutator of a dynamo, electric motor, or similar apparatus.
Armature
the rotating coil or coils of a dynamo or electric motor.
Electromagnetic induction
a primary electric cell in which the electrolyte is a liquid.
Wet Cell
a primary electric cell in which the electrolyte is a liquid.
Dry Cell
an electric cell in which the electrolyte is absorbed in a solid to form a paste, preventing spillage.
Proton
a stable subatomic particle occurring in all atomic nuclei, with a positive electric charge equal in magnitude to that of an electron, but of opposite sign.
Electron
a stable subatomic particle with a charge of negative electricity, found in all atoms and acting as the primary carrier of electricity in solids.
Neutral
A neutral chemical substance is neither an acid nor an alkali:
