Electricity And The National Grid Flashcards
1
Q
What is the national grid
A
The network of pylons and cables that covers the whole of Britain, getting electricity to homes everywhere
2
Q
What does the national grid do?
A
- Takes electrical energy from power stations to where it’s needed
3
Q
To transmit the huge amount of power needed you need….
A
Either high voltage or a high current
4
Q
What’s the problem with a high current
A
You lose loads of energy through heat in the cables
5
Q
What do the transformers have to do
A
- Step up the voltage at one end for efficient transmission
- Bring it back down to safe, usable levels at the other end
6
Q
The voltage is increased using a
A
Step up transformer
