Electricity and Magnetism Flashcards
How can you increase the strength of an electromagnet?
Increase the current, increase the number of turns, add an iron core.
What piece of equipment is used to measure current?
Ammeter
Define potential difference and give the unit.
The push from the battery, the energy transferred by each charge.
Measured in volts.
Define current and give the unit.
Current is the flow of charge.
Measured in amperes or amps.
What pieces of equipment would you need to investigate a magnetic field?
A bar magnet, a plotting compass or iron filings, and some paper.
In a parallel circuit what is the same for each componenet?
Potential DIfference
Why is the potential difference different for componentes in a series circuit?
They have different resitances, so more energy is needed to get the electrons across the higher resistances.
Define resistance and give the unit.
The ammount a material resists the flow of charge.
Measured in ohms.
Why do we get static shocks?
Electrons are transfeered when two insulators are rubbed together.
Electrons build up on a surface.
When the surface is brought near a conductor, then the electrons jump from one surface to the other causing a shock.
What are the advantages of an electromagnet?
Can be turned on and off, can change the strength.
What piece of equipment is used to measure potential difference?
Voltmeter.
In a series circuit what is the same for each componenet?
Current.
