Electricity and electromagnetism definitions Flashcards
Define Electric current
The amount of electric charge that passes through a wires cross-section in units of time
Define the electrical potential difference
The electrical potential difference between 2 points on an electric circuit is defined as the change in potential energy per unit of charge moved between the 2 points
Define resistance
Resistance is a property of matter that refers to how difficult it is for electric current to travel through a metal or material
Define KCL (series)
When the loads are connected one after another (in series) the current across the source is equivalent to the current across each of the loads
Define KCL (parallel)
When the loads are connected at the same 2 points (in parallel) the sum of the current across each of the loads is equal to the current across the source
Define KVL (series)
When the loads are connected on after another (in series) the electrical potential difference across the source equals the sum of the electrical potential difference across the loads
Define KVL (parallel)
When the loads are connected at the same 2 points (in parallel) the voltage gain across the source equals the voltage drop-off across each of the loads
Define Ohm’s law
The electrical potential difference across a resistor is proportional to the current through it
