Electricity Flashcards
Current
The general definition of a current is a flow of charge.
Current is defined numerically as the number of charges that pass a certain point in one second.
Electrical Current
An electrical current is the number of negatively charged electrons which flow past a set point in the circuit in one second.
Resistance
Resistance is how much a component opposes the flow of current through it.
Voltage
Voltage is the difference in potential energy between two points in a circuit.
Series Circuit
A series circuit is formed when all circuit components are on a single loop of wire.
Parallel Circuit
A parallel circuit is a circuit with multiple branches.
Direct Current
The electric charge flows in one direction.
Alternating Current
The electric charge reverses direction a number of times per second.
Ammeter
an instrument for measuring electric current in amperes.
Voltmeter
an instrument for measuring electric potential in volts.
Battery
a container consisting of one or more cells, in which chemical energy is converted into electricity and used as a source of power.
Energy Source
An energy source, such as a battery or a cell, supplies energy to the circuit.
Energy User
An energy user transforms electrical energy from the flowing electrons into useful energy.
Static Electricity
Static electricity is the build up of charge on a surface.
