Chemistry Flashcards
Atom
The smallest component of a chemical element
Matter
The substance of which any physical object is composed except energy
Atomic Particles
One of the particles of which an atom is constituted, examples are Proton, Neutron, and Electron
Electron
An elementary particle that is found in the shell of an atom and is a fundamental constituent of matter, having a negative charge and an AMU mass of 0.000549
Neutron
An elementary particle having no charge, a particle that is found in the nucleus of an atom and has an AMU mass of approximately 1
Proton
An elementary particle that is found in the nucleus of an atom. It has an AMU mass of approximately 1 and a positive charge.
AMU
An abbreviation for Atomic Mass Unit
Electron Shell
The orbit of electrons that move around the nucleus where the protons and neutrons are found.
Element
Defined by the number of protons that a substance possesses.
Compound
A substance formed when two or more elements are chemically bonded together.
Periodic Table
A table of chemical elements arranged in order of atomic number. The periodic table consists of 118 elements.
Atomic Number
A number used to indicate how many protons an element possesses in the nucleus of the atom
Atomic Mass
The mass of an atom of a chemical element which is expressed in Atomic Mass Units (AMU)
