electrical terminology Flashcards
what is potential difference
The difference in voltages between two points in a circuit
OHMS law
V= I x R
what is voltage, symbols and formula
electrical pressure, the difference in electrical al charge between two points, symbols include;
V = volts
EMF = electromotive force
PD = potential difference
V=E/Q
E=energy in joules
Q = coulombs
current is what?
the number of coulombs in a cross section of conductor in one second
formula for current
I=Q/t
I = current in amps
Q = charge
t = time
1 coulomb of charge in 1 electron
6.24 x 10^18 = 1 amp electrons per second
what is resistance?
the opposition to the flow of electric current, its a measurement of the PD required to cause 1 amp to flow through a circuit
what is conductance?
this is the reciprocal of resistance
formula for conductance
G = 1/R
G = conductance in siemens (S)
conductance example
R = 5 ohms
G = 1/5(ohms)
what do the number of charges moved per second depend on?
the Electromotive force (EMF) of the supply and the resistance of the circuit
in an electrical circuit, what prevents the continued speed of the electrons?
the collision with ions
what does an electrical supply do?
it separates charges
