Q

What happens during an arc flash event?

A

And arcing fault releases a huge amount of energy. Steel and copper can change from solid to vapor, creating an explosive pressure wave. The amount of energy released depends on the voltage, available fault current and clearing time of overcurrent protection devices.

21
Q

What does PPE stand for?

A

Personal protective equipment

22
Q

What must a label on energized equipment have?

A
  • The nominal system voltage
  • the arc flash boundary
  • the date of the hazard analysis

*The calculation method and data to support the information for the label must also be documented on the label

23
Q

A label on energized equipment must also have at least one of these:

A
  • The available incident energy and the corresponding working distance
  • The minimum arc rating of PPE
  • The required level of PPE or
  • The hazard/risk category for the equipment
24
Q

What is the purpose of wearing PPE?

A

To protect the users body from physical injuries caused by heat, electricity, contact with chemicals and airborne particulates. Helps reduce the risk of serious injury.

25
Q

PPE selection is based on one of two methods:

A
  1. The amount of incident energy exposure or

2. The hazard/risk category

26
Q

In all cases, de-energizing the system prior to performing work is the preferred method of protecting workers

True or False

A

True

Basic compliance to CSA Z462 requirements is established with a five step process for safety and operability

True or False

A

True

28

What is the lockout?

A

The process of ensuring that machinery or equipment does not turn on or move during installation, repair or maintenance.

29
Q

What are the six basic steps for locking out and re-energizing equipment when you need to work on it?

A
  1. Advise everyone
  2. Shut down the equipment
  3. Disconnect the equipment
  4. Install a lock and tag them
  5. Check the equipment to confirm it’s
    isolated
