Electrical Energy Flashcards
Electrical energy
The energy provided by the flow of electrons in an electric circuit. Measured in J (joules)
Electric cell
A device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy
What does an electric cell contain
It contains two metal pieces called electrodes which are surrounded by a solution that conducts electricity called an electrolyte
What is the battery
Two or more cells connected together
What are the two charges on electrodes
One electrode is negatively charged called an anode and the other is positively charged called a cathode
In a battery where do the electrons flow from
They flow from the negative terminal through the circuit to the positive terminal
Types of electric cells
Primary cell- And electric cell that can be only used once. The chemical reaction that generates the flow of electrons irreversible
Secondary cell- And electric so that can be recharged for example electrical energy from a wall outlet can be used to reverse the chemical reaction
Fuel cell
A type of electric cell where buy chemicals are continuously supplied is the cell operates as the chemicals are used in the fuel-cell they are removed. They can operate for longer periods of time compared to regular electric cells
