Electrical Energy Flashcards
What is the current like in a series circuit?
It is the same the whole way around
What is the current like in a parallel circuit?
The currents in the branches of the circuit add up to the supply current
What do the potential differences around a series circuit add up to?
The potential difference of the supply
What is the total resistance in a series circuit?
The sum of all the individual resistors
What does adding another resistor do to a series circuit?
It increases the overall resistance
When resistors are connected in a parallel circuit what is their potential difference?
They have the same potential difference across them
What is the total resistance value in a parallel circuit?
It will always be less than the smallest individual resistor
What would adding a resistor to a parallel circuit do?
It would decrease the total resistance because you are providing an alternative path for electric charge.
What is the current through a resistor in a parallel circuit?
Ohm’s Law - I = V/R
What is the current?
The number of electrons through a wire per second
What is current measured in?
Amps
What is voltage?
The amount of pressure pushing electrons through a wire
What is voltage measured in?
Volts
What is power?
The rate of work done by the electricity
What is power measured in?
Watts
What does a resistor do?
Reduces the current and are like friction
What is the current like in a series circuit?
The same the whole way around
What is the voltage like in a series circuit?
It splits up but all adds up to the total power source
What is the current like in a parallel circuit?
It splits up, divides and then recombines
What is the voltage like in a parallel circuit?
The same the whole way around
What does a diode do?
It allows the electricity it only goes through it one way
What is the negative side on an LED like?
Flat side and has a short wire
How does the resistance change in an LDR?
When it is bright there is low resistance
When it is dark there is high resistance
What is an LED
Light Emitting Diode- very efficient energy source
