Electric fields and static electricity Flashcards
What is static electricity
Charges that are not free to move (e.g. insulating materials)
This causes them to build up in one place and often ends in a spark or shock
How does static energy build up
When insulating materials are rubbed together the negatively charged electrons will be scraped off and transferred to the other material which leaves one positively charged and one negatively charged
Do the positively charges move during static electricity
No
Only the electrons move
What causes sparks
A bigger change in potential difference between the object and the earth (0V) the electrons can jump across the gap
What is the force when to opposite charges attract
Electrostatic attraction/repulsion
What is electric fields
A field around any electrically charged object
What happens when you get closer to a electric field
Gets stronger
How to draw electric fields
Go from positive to negative
Always at right angles to the surface
The closer the lines the stronger the field is
