Electric Fields Flashcards
What is an electric field?
A area around a charged particle where the particle would exert forces on other charged particles.
What direction does the force on an object act in an electric field?
If they are opposite charges then towards but if they are like charges then the force repels them.
What objects experience a force in an electric field?
Objects with charged particles
What is Coulomb’s law?
F=kx q1 x q2 / r squared where k = 8.99x10 to the power of 9
What is electric field strength?
the potential difference between 2 points and it is measured in volts per meter
What is a uniform electric field?
a field where the field strength is constant everywhere
What is a radial electric field?
A radial field spreads uniformly to (or from) the charge in all directions, and the strength of the field is indicated by the spacing of the field lines.
What is electric potential?
Electric potential is defined as the amount of work/energy needed per unit of electric charge to move the charge from a reference point to a specific point. and is given by the equation V= k x q / r
What is the electric potential at infinity?
0
What is an equipotential?
an area where the electric potential is the same for everything, this is often represented in rings
When is the electric potential positive, and when is it negative?
if they are like charges then it is positive, but if they are opposite charges then it is negitive
What does it mean if the work done in moving an object in an electric field is positive?
there has been work to move the object
What does it mean if the work done in moving an object in an electric field is negative?
there was negitive work because the force from the electric field moved it
what is the equation for electric field strength in a uniform field?
(V1 - V2) / d
