Electric Circuit Symbols Flashcards
Cell
Battery of cells
Battery
Power supply
Describe a power supply
It is permanent, not temporary and is not a battery. It provides current by plugging something into it. It relies on an electricity source
D.c power supply
Doesn’t run out and follows conventional current flow.
Describe the flow of current from a d.c power source
Like a battery it only supplies direct current in 1 direction.
Conventional current flow
A.c power supply
Fixed resistor
Slows current down
Name, ability and example
Variable resistor
Has the ability to change resistance such as a dimmer switch or hairdryer
Name, purpose, example
Thermistor
Reacts to temperature
Can change resistance according to temperature
Eg. Infrared security camera that sees change in temperature
Name, example, purpose
Light-dependent resistor/photo resistor
Light-controlled variable resistor. The darker it is the higher the resistance
The brighter it is the lower the resistance
NEEDS TO BE IN A CIRCUIT WITH A TRANSISTOR
Day/night switch
LDR
Heater
(Won’t see in circuit)
Potential divider
Transformer
Magnetising coil
Parallel cells
Switch
Name and purpose
Earth/ground
Way to dissipate charge
(Bury it)
Junction of conductors
Wires coming together
Lamp
ALSO ACTS AS RESISTOR
Lamp
ALSO ACTS AS RESISTOR
Motor
Generator
Ammeter
ONLY CONNECTED IN SERIES
Are ammeters connected in parallel or series and why
Series as they have a low resistance
What does a voltmeter do and do we connect it in parallel or series
It measures the e.m.f in volts (how much energy we are supplying to the circuit)
Parallel as it has a very high resistance and it does not alter the flow of current
Diode
What does a diode do +Eg. In real life
It changes AC current to DC
Electronic devices like current going in 1 direction, so there is a diode in your laptop charger
Name and purpose
LED
Light emitting diode
Changes AC current to DC current and emits light in the process (needs very little current)
Name and purpose
Fuse
Protection device, trip switch/circuit breaker
Stops current that can cause circuit damage depending on the rating. The wire burns out to stop the connection
Name and description
Relay coil
made of an electromagnet coil and a magnetic switch
