FPTP (First Past the Post)
An electoral system in which a party or candidate is elected by achieving a simple majority
AMS (Additional Members System)
A type of proportional representation in which each elector votes separately for a party and for a representative
STV (Single Transferrable Vote)
One vote per voter. Vote is reallocated until there is a winner
SV (Supplementary Vote)
Each voter gets two votes. Votes are reallocated until a candidate reaches at least 50% of the votes
Safe seat
A parliamentary seat that is likely to be retained with a large majority in an election
Marginal seat
A parliamentary seat that is held with a small majority, also known as a swing seat
Minority government
A government in which the governing party has the most seats but still less than half the total
Coalition government
A coalition government is a cabinet of a parliamentary government in which many or multiple political parties cooperate
