Q
What are 5 features of the Single Transferrable Vote system (STV)?
A
- Used for the Northern Ireland Assembly and local government in Northern Ireland and Scotland
- Multi-member constituencies
- Candidates are ranked in order of preference
- Candidates are elected if they receive a certain quota of votes: (total votes cast / (seats available + 1)) + 1
- Counting takes place in several rounds, with the bottom choice being eliminated and votes for that candidate being transferred to second/third preferences
7
Q
What are 2 advantages of STV?
A
- Can be highly proportional
- Multiple representatives for everyone
8
Q
What are 2 drawbacks of STV?

- Varied degree of proportionality
- Strong government very unlikely
9

- Counting by preference order (with last being eliminated and having votes transferred each time) until one candidate gets 50%
10

- Broad range of views considered

- Voter choice
14
Q
What are 3 drawbacks of AMS?
A
- Lacks proportionality
- Confusing
- Less effective representation due to large constituencies
