Electoral systems Flashcards
1
Q
How does AMS work?
A
- Vote for two candiates, one regional and one constituent one
- The CONSTITUENCY VOTE = same as FPTP - each constit. elects a member based on whichever one gets the majority, they then get a seat in Scottish or Welsh parliament
- REGIONAL VOTE: Scotland and Wales are split into larger regional constituencies (8 in Scot each with 7 candidates)
- Each party draws up a list of their candidates for each region ranking them as well, voters then vote for their most preferred party (candidate?)
- Based off of the number of votes each candidate/party got, a number of candidates from the voted parties are allocated to the regional constituencies

Q
How does STV work?
A
- Voters rank a candidate of each party by preference
- Those who achieved the Droop Quota (( total votes available +1/ number of seats available in region +1) +1) automatically get a seat
- Any votes achieved over Droop quota are redistrubuted, if any candiates now have the droop quota then they are given a seat as well
- If there are seats still remaining then the candidates with the fewest votes are eliminated and their votes are then redistributed again
- This continues until all the seats in the region are filled
