Ans : Recently, ECI hosted the 2nd International conference on the theme ‘Use of Technology and Elections Integrity’ at New Delhi.
Q. How is technology being used in elections ? Give examples .
Ans : 1. Pre-election activities :
- Digitization of Electoral rolls and Electors Photo Identification Card (EPIC).
- Drafting of polling personnel/party, randomisation of EVMs and micro observers .
2. Election day activities :
- Communication Plan for Election Tracking (ComET) : Implemented to computerize communication details of all the polling stations of the country .
- Web casting/video streaming of Poll proceedings from polling stations .
3. Post election :
- Dissemination of election results to the stakeholders across the globe .
4. Other activities related to elections :
- Use of technology in other activities such as hosting of Electoral rolls, website for redressal of public grievances etc .

Ans : 1. Reduced Electoral frauds .
2. Help to improve the accuracy of voters’ register .
3. Improve the accessibility: Electronically Transmitted Postal Ballot System (ETPBS) for the service voters.
4. Improve Efficiency: Efficiency gains in election office management processes.
5. Improve the voting percentage : Internet is especially useful for voter outreach especially for young voters.
6. Disseminate election-related information: through websites, e-Newsletter, social media, podcasts, etc.
Q What are some challenges in the use of technology in elections?
Ans : 1. Use of Deep fake : alter public perception and mislead the voters.
Eg : former CEC, TS Krishnamurthy Deep fake video circulated in EVM hacking just before the election.
2. Voters manipulation : Cambridge Analytica worked for Trump’s presidential campaign in 2016.
3. Cybersecurity risks : Allegations of Russian interference in 2016 USA elections .
4. Universality accessible of technologies : could be employed and manipulated by anyone within kr outside the country to Target protected groups .
5. Lack of awareness of voters.

Ans : 1. Voter protections in online space : by data localisation.
2. Accountability mechanisms for big tech companies.
3. Recognition and Punishment of Cyber Interference .
4. Dedicated cybersecurity unit in Election conducting institution : Units should train officers and political staffers in basic cyber hygiene, such as updating passwords and recognising phishing attempts .
