Election
Procedure whereby persons are chosen by voting to represent the voters for running the government.
Method of election of President
Indirectly elected by elected members of MLAs of states including National Capital Territory of Delhi and Union Territory of Pondicherry and elected members of both houses of the parliament at central level
Method of election of Vice President
Indirectly elected by elected members of both houses of parliament at central level
Method of election of Rajya Sabha
Indirectly elected by MLAs
Method of election of Legislative Council
Indirectly elected by MLAs from amongst persons who are not MLAs
General elections
Elections held to elect new members to Lok Sabha after expiry of normal term of 5 years.
Mid term elections
Elections held before the expiry of a full term of 5 years(due to dissolution of Lok Sabha) to elect a new Lok Sabha which will serve for a full term of 5 years.
By-election
Election held to re-elect a person who’s office has fallen vacant before conclusion of term due to death, resignation before end of term, etc. The re-elected person will serve for the remainder of the term
