Elbow Patholgy Flashcards
Lateral Epicondylitis
” Tennis Elbow”
- most common elbow pathology
- Age is 40-50
- common extensor tendon and repetitive supination movements and wrist extension
- gripping
- think about office workers and extended elbows. Tender to palpation at lateral epicondyle
Decreases grip strength and positive for special tennis elbow testing (Cozens test against extension resistance at wrist, pain with passive wrist flexion and also with 3rd digit extension)
Elbow Effusion Clinical Management
Rule out fracture, rule out infection, rule out additional medical contributions
Ulnar collateral ligament injury
Valgus force at elbow joint causing a tear
- overhead throwing incident
- medial ligament of elbow torn
- positive for valgus stress test
Medial Epicondylitis
“Golfers Elbow”
- common flexor tendon involvement
- repetitive flexion or pronation that leads to tensor to palpation of medial epicondyle and possible inflammation
- positive medial epicondyle test (
Biceps Tendon Strain
Eccentric overloading of the biceps
- tender to palpation of distal bicep
- pain and pop in distal elbow
- loss of elbow flexion and supination strength
- swelling in cub it’s fossa
Median Nerve injury
- weakness of pronator teres
- trauma, compression, systemic disease
- anterior interosseous nerve compressed
- unable to pinch tips to thumb or index fingers
Ulnar nerve injury
- cubital tunnel
- swelling and sensory and paresthesia issues
- look at specific areas of hand and wrist with inability to make a fist and unable to flex 4th and 5th digit
- has an effect
