Elbow, forearm and wrist Flashcards
Joints within the joint capsule of the elbow
Humeroradial, humeroulnar and proximal radioulnar
Classifications of the humeroulnar joint
Structurally synovial, functionally hinge.
Articulatory surfaces of the humeroulnar joint
The trochlea of the humerus and the trochear fossa of the ulna
Classifications of the humeroradial joint
Structurally synovial, functionally hinge or pivot.
Articulatory surfaces of the humeroradial joint
The capitulum of the humerus and the superior surface of the radial head
Classifications of the proximal radioulnar joint
Structurally synovial, functionally pivot
Articulatory surfaces of the proximal radioulnar joint
The radial notch of the ulna and the medial aspect of the radial head.
Ligaments of the elbow
Annular, medial and lateral colalteral ligament
Annular ligament
Wraps around the radial head and attaches to the radial notch of the ulna. Functions to stabilize and increase the articulatory surface of the proximal radioulnar joint.
Medial and lateral collateral ligaments of the elbow.
Are thickenings of he joint capsule
Joints of the forearm
Proximal and distal radioulnar joints
Classifications of the distal radioulnar joint
Structurally synovial, functionally pivot
Radiocarpal joint classifications
Structurally synovial, functionally ellipsoidal or condyloid
Articulatory surfaces of the distal radioulnar joint
The head of the ulna and the ulnar notch of the radius.
Non-contractile structures of the wrist
Articulation disc, medial and collateral ligaments, flexor retinaculum and the extensor retinaculum.
Articulatory surfaces of the radiocarpal joint
Distal surface of the radius, the scaphoid and a portion of the lunate.
Medial collateral ligament of the wrist
Also called ulnar carpal ligament. Attaches the distal ulna and the triquetral. Becomes taut during radial deviation.
Articulation disc
Fibrocartilagenous disc between the distal ulna and the triquetral and a portion of the lunate; part of the wrist.
Is the ulna involved in the wrist joint?
No, the articulation disc fills the space between the ulna and the hand.
Lateral collateral ligament of the wrist
Also called the radial carpal ligament. Attaches the distal radius and the scaphoid. Becomes taut during ulnar deviation.
Flexor retinaculum
Strong band of connective tissue on the palmar surface of the hand. Provides a conduit for the flexor tendons and creates the ceiling of the carpal tunnel.
Ceiling of the carpal tunnel
Flexor retinaculum
Components of a synovial joint
Joint capsule, synovial membrane, synovial fluid, hyaline cartilage
Extensor retinaculum
Strong band of connective tissue of the dorsal surface of the hand. Provides conduit for the tendons of the extensor muscles.
Classifications of diarthrotic joints
Hinge, pivot, saddle, ellipsoidal, gliding, ball and socket.
Uniaxial joints
Hinge and pivot
Biaxial joints
Saddle, ellipsoidal/condyloid
Multiaxial joints
Gliding, ball and socket
