Elbow Flashcards
Special tests
1) Lateral epicondylitis – Stretch Test
2) Lateral epicondylitis – Resisted Test
3) Medial epicondylitis – Stretch Test
1) Lateral epicondylitis – Stretch Test
sit on plinth feet supported on stool
Flex model’s elbow to allow some pronation of forearm.
Now combine this with extension of the elbow.Pain maybe experienced over the lateral epicondyle of humerus(CEO) during the manoeuvre.
If there is no pain =
continue to stretch soft tissues by adding further passive pronation of the forearm with the elbow maintained in extension. Check for pain over the lateral epicondyle.
If there is no pain = add a final stretch by combining the above manoeuvres with full passive flexion of wrist.
Again, check for pain over the lateral epicondyle. Onset of pain indicates a lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow).
2)Lateral epicondylitis – Resisted Test
sit on plinth feet supported on stool
Position the model’s arm in elbow extension and forearm pronation as previously described. Ask the model to clench his/her fist and then resist wrist extension.
Onset of pain indicates a lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow).
3)Medial epicondylitis – Stretch Test
sit on plinth feet supported on stool
Flex model’s elbow to allow supination of forearm.
Now combinet his with extension of the elbow. Pain may be experienced over the medial epicondyle of the humerus (CFO)during the manoeuvre.
If ther is no pain=
continue to stretch the soft tissues by adding further passive supination of forearm with elbow maintained in extension.
Check for pain over medial epicondyle
If no pain=
,add a final stretch by combining above manoeuvres
with full passive extension of the model’s wrist
.Again, check for pain over medial epicondyle
Onset of pain indicates a medial epicondylitis (golfers elbow)
