Q

Are ionic substances soluble?

A
  • dissolve in polar solvents (H2O)

- do NOT dissolve in non-polar solvents, no regions of positive/negative charge, no new bonds form

Q

Do ionic substance conduct electricity?

A
  • solids do NOT

- molten/aqueous solution DOES; electrons can move and carry charge

10
Q

Is mp and bp of metallic lattice high or low?

15
Q

Why can ionic substances conduct electricity when dissolved in water

A

The ions are mobile and can be attracted to charged electrodes.

Not the movement of free electrons!!!

16
Q

Describe the bonding in sodium hydroxide as fully as you can.

A

The sodium ion and hydroxide ion share an ionic bond.
The charge on the sodium is +1 and the charge on hydroxide is -1.
The hydroxide ion is made up of a oxygen atom and hydrogen atom covalently bonded.

17
Q

Write the formula for Sodium Chloride

A

Sodium is in group 1 so will form a +1 ion
Chlorine is in group 7 so will form a -1 ion
To balance the charges we would simply need 1 of each to give NaCl

18
Q
What do the following reactions make:
acid + alkali -->
acid + base -->
acid + carbonate -->
acid + metal -->
A

acid + alkali –> salt + water
acid + base –> salt + water
acid + carbonate –> Salt + water + carbon dioxide
acid + metal –> salt + hydrogen

19
Q

What is the difference between an alkali and a base?

A

An alkali is a soluble base

20
Q

Which sulfates will NOT dissolve in water?

A

barium, calcium, lead, and silver sulfates

21
Q

Which halides will NOT dissolve in water?

A

silver and lead halides

22
Q

Which carbonates will NOT dissolve in water?

A

All metal carbonates are insoluble

23
Q

Which hydroxides will NOT dissolve in water?

A

All except group 1 hydroxides and ammonium hydroxide.

24
Q
What do the following state symbols mean?
s =
l =
g =
aq =
A
s = solid
l = liquid
g = gas
aq = aqueous = dissolved in water
