EKG Flashcards
QRS complex represents…
Phase of ventricular depolarization
PR interval represents…
Time of atrial depolarization onset to ventricular depolarization onset
QRS duration represents…
The duration of ventricular depolarization
QT interval represents…
The duration of ventricular depolarization and repolarization
What does the U wave represent and is it always visible?
Intraventricular septum repolarization, is not always visible. Always follows the T wave. If extremely prominent, suspect hyperkalemia, hypercalcemia or hypothyroid.
T wave represents
Ventricular repolarization
P wave represents
Atrial depolarization
Common EKG changes with hypokalmia include…
ST depression, inverted T waves and prominent U waves
A patient with hypokalemia may also develop…
Heart block
Each large box on an EKG =
.20 sec
Each small box =
.04 sec
Describe the 300 method of HR determination
If rhythm is regular, HR is 300/#of large boxes between QRS complexes (RR interval).
e.g if 2.5 boxes HR = 300/2.5=120
Describe the 6 second method to determine heart rate on an EKG
It is used if the rhythm is irregular. Count the number of R waves in a 6 second strip and multiply by 10.
e.g. 8 R waves x 10 = HR 80
What are the 6 components that enable the interpretation of EKGs?
Rate (tachy, brady) Regularity (regular, irregular) P wave PR Interval (duration) QRS complex (shape, size, duration) QT interval (duration)
