Q

What does the U wave represent and is it always visible?

A

Intraventricular septum repolarization, is not always visible. Always follows the T wave. If extremely prominent, suspect hyperkalemia, hypercalcemia or hypothyroid.

Q

Describe the 300 method of HR determination

A

If rhythm is regular, HR is 300/#of large boxes between QRS complexes (RR interval).
e.g if 2.5 boxes HR = 300/2.5=120

Q

Describe the 6 second method to determine heart rate on an EKG

A

It is used if the rhythm is irregular. Count the number of R waves in a 6 second strip and multiply by 10.

e.g. 8 R waves x 10 = HR 80

Q

What are the 6 components that enable the interpretation of EKGs?

A
Rate (tachy, brady)
Regularity (regular, irregular)
P wave
PR Interval (duration)
QRS complex (shape, size, duration)
QT interval (duration)
