Points from the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003

A

FGM is illegal unless surgical procedure is necessary for girl’s health or childbirth.
Illegal to arrange or assist in a UK national or resident to be taken oversease for FGM
Illegal for those with a parental responsibility to fail to protect their child from FGM.
Mandatory to report FGM in a minor to police within 1 month.

Complications of FGM

A

Acute: haemorrhagic shock, sepsis, pain, urinary retention, infection (HIV, Hep B),death.
Chronic: dyspareunia, sexual dysfunction, keloid scar, UTI, subfertility, increase risk of PPH, psychological affects.

Difference between Fraser Guidelines and Gillick Competence

A

Fraser : only apply to contraception.

Gillick : any child under 16 may have capacity for broader uses than contraception

A

Risk to mother’s life if pregnancy continued
Serious physical or mental illness in mum will occur if pregnancy continued.
The risk of termination out weigh the risk of continuation.
Risk of physical or mental illness to existing children outweigh the risk of termination.
Substantial risk that the child would suffer serious physical or mental illness and be seriously handicapped.
