Egg & Female Reproductive System Flashcards
What is an egg an example of?
Gametes
What is the fertilised egg called?
A zygote
What happens when the egg is fertilised?
The egg will divide and produce more cells. After two months, it is called an embryo. From the two to nine months, it is referred to as a foetus.
How long is the foetus?
The foetus will grow to the average of 51cm before birth.
Egg cells contain a lot of cytoplasm, why is this?
Cytoplasm contains a lot of mitochondria for the release of energy
What is the zona pellucida?
It is a layer surrounding the egg which stops more than one sperm fertilising the egg
What is the overall function of the female reproductive system?
To produce offspring
The female reproductive system consists of 5 organs. Which are they?
Egg cells are produced in and released from the ovaries and travel into the oviducts. The female has two ovaries which alternate each month. Th oviducts adore aligned with epithelial tissues. Ads of ciliates cells and push the egg along. The egg is fertilised in the oviduct when a sperm is inserted. If an egg is fertilised, it implants itself into the uterus (organ made of tissue and muscle).
