How many eggs are in the ovaries?

A

In females, the ovaries contain hundreds of small, undeveloped egg cells. Once every 28-32 days, an egg becomes mature and is released into the oviduct (sometimes called the Fallopian tube).

What is an oviduct?

A

The oviduct is lined with small hairs (cilia) which move the egg cell slowly along the tube towards the uterus. the uterus is where the baby will develop. It has string, muscular walls and a soft lining.

What is a cervix?

A

The lower end of the uterus is made of a ring of muscle called the cervix. The cervix holds the baby in place during pregnancy. The cervix opens into the vagina.

What are the features of an egg cell?

A

0.1mm smaller than a full stop
The cytoplasm contains a store of food used to provide energy for the fertilised egg to develop.
The jelly coat helps to make sure that only one sperm can enter.
