Wie war es? - In der Zeit, als ich’s
gebraucht habe, gut, aber ich war froh,
als ich’s nicht mehr brauchte und losgeworden bin,
weil es einfach ganz viel Stress gemacht hat
mit den ganzen Untersuchungen
und wo stell’ ich’s hin, wenn du
in der Stadt wohnst, Parkplatzsuche. Äh…
Und als ich’s nicht mehr brauchte
und ich’s verkauft habe, war ich total
glücklich, weil ich eine Last weniger hatte.
How was it? - During the time when I
needed it, (it was) good, but I was happy
when I didn’t need it anymore and got rid of it,
because it just caused lots of stress
with all of the (trips to the garage)
and where do I put it when you
live in the city, searching for a parking space. Erm…
And when I didn’t need it anymore
and I sold it I was so
happy because I had one burden fewer.

Na ja, nicht losgeworden, sondern ich
hab’ es sozusagen beerdigt, also mit
noch mal auch ‘ner politischen Botschaft dabei,
also eben das Ende des fossilen Zeitalters,
und hab’ das dann auch noch mal so
richtig schön mit Farbe besprüht
und, ähm, ja, und hab’ das dann
zum, äh, zum Schrottplatz gefahren.
Well, didn’t get rid of it, but I
buried it, you could say, so with
a political message,
the end of the fossil (fuel) age,
and I also sprayed it really
nicely with paint
and, erm, yeah, and then drove
it to the, erm, to the scrapyard.

Lässt du dir einfach Zeit oder bist du
generell dagegen? - Ähm, ich hab’
angefangen mit meinem Führerschein
und bin dann, ähm, umgezogen fürs Studium
und ich hab’ gemerkt, dass ich in der Stadt
einfach kein Auto brauche, weil’s
Leihfahrräder gibt und die U-Bahn
und die Busse und dann war’s nicht mehr wichtig.

generally against it? - Erm, I
started with my driving licence
and then, erm, moved to study
and I noticed that I just don’t
need a car in the city because
there are rental bikes and the metro
and the buses and then it wasn’t important anymore.

Einen Renault Trafic. Das ist so ein
Transporter und ich hab’ den ausgebaut
als Camper selber, schön mit Holz.

was unternimmst du mit deinem Auto?
Ja, am liebsten mach’ ich mit meinem Auto Urlaub.
Ich fahr’ sehr gerne Fahrrad, Mountainbike,
und ich hab’ das so ausgebaut,
dass ich mein Fahrrad mitnehmen kann,
und fahr’ damit gerne in die Berge,
um dort mit dem Fahrrad zu fahren.

A Renault Trafic. It’s a kind of
van and I’ve converted it into
a camper myself, nicely with wood.

Yeah, I most like to go on holiday with my car.
I really enjoy cycling, mountain biking,
and I kitted it out
so that I can take my bike with me,
and I like to drive into the mountains with it
to ride my bike there.
Und warum brauchst du ein Auto?
Für meine Fernreisen, wenn ich in den Urlaub fahre,
für mein vieles Gepäck, was ich dann habe.
Und wäre ein Mietwagen nicht
eine Lösung dazu? - Ich nutze Mietwagen,
tatsächlich Carsharing, in Berlin.
Wozu brauchst du dein Auto? - Ähm…
Tatsächlich, um nach Hause zu kommen meistens.
Und sonst steht’s häufig mal rum.

Actually, to get home, usually.
And otherwise it’s often just not being used.
Hauptsächlich, um Dinge für unsere Haustiere
zu kaufen und ab und zu, um Möbel zu kaufen.
Sonst in der Stadt verwende ich
eigentlich hauptsächlich das Rad.
Mainly for buying things for our
pets, and occasionally for buying furniture.
Otherwise I mainly use
my bike in the city, actually.
Ich fotografier’ auch nebenbei sehr häufig
und deswegen muss ich so, äh, längere Strecke(n)
zurücklegen. Sei es nach Bayern, sei es
(zur) Nordsee, Ostsee oder wie auch immer. - Ja.
Und also Sehenswürdigkeiten, Natur in Deutschland.
Und deswegen brauch’ ich ein Auto,
weil ich komm’ an bestimmte Ortschaften
oder Location(s) ohne Auto nicht hin.

es ist unheimlich schwer, das, äh,
damit zu vereinbaren. - Ja, das ist…
Das ist nicht gut planbar. - Ja, das ist verständlich.
I do photography very often on the site
and therefore I need to, erm, travel longer
routes. Be it Bavaria, be it
to the North Sea, Baltic Sea or wherever. - Yeah.
And tourist attractions, nature in Germany.
And that’s why I need a car,
because without a car I (wouldn’t)
get to certain places or locations.

it’s incredibly difficult, erm,
to make arrangements when using it. - Yeah, it’s…
It isn’t predictable. - Yeah, that’s understandable.
Braucht man in Berlin ein eigenes Auto?
Nein, also du kommst mit’m Fahrrad überall hin
und mit Öffentlichen auch. - Ja. - Brauchst nicht.

No, I mean, you get everywhere by bicycle
and with public transport, too. - Yeah. - You don’t need it.
Und dann erzähl mir etwas von dem Privileg,
das wir hier in Berlin haben,
kein Auto brauchen zu müssen.
Äh, ja, es ist wirklich ‘n Privileg.
Ich liebe das, ähm, weil du einfach,
wenn du irgendwo hinmusst, ähm, kannst du
einfach in die U-Bahn-Station gehen
oder an die Bushaltestelle und in der Regel
kommt in wenigen Minuten irgend ‘ne U-Bahn
oder ‘n Bus, die dich dann einfach
da hinfährt, wo du hinwillst. Du musst dir
keine Gedanken machen, ich liebe das.
And then tell me something about the privilege
we have here in Berlin
of not needing to (have) a car.
Erm, yeah, it really is a privilege.
I love it, erm, because you just,
when you need to go somewhere, erm, you can
just go to the metro station
or to the bus stop and generally
in a few minutes a metro or
a bus will come which just takes you
to where you want to go. You don’t need to
think about it, I love it.
