1915= Tsar took on the role of Commander in Chief.
1916= Brusilov Offensive failed and chronic shortages of munitions and suitable clothing.
Back in Russia
Tsarina who was German took over running of Russia.
Rasputin who was her close friend meddled in the government- he was killed in December 1916.
Disaster Economically
Huge amount spent on WW1.
1914= 1,500 roubles
1918= 14,500 roubles
Production fell despite women and children taking over men’s jobs.
Germany took overWestern Russia. This affected production.
Essential household goods were scarce- munitions had priority.
Food shortages due to:
- Transporting of food inefficient
- Hoarding
- Drop in production
- Grain sent to soldiers leaving cities short
Government seen as inefficient so various bodies tried to make up for this inefficiency
Businessmen set up a Congress of Representatives of Industry and Business to coordinate production
Zemstva set up a Union of Zemstva to provide medical facilities
1915: Zemstva and Dumas joined under Prince Lvov to set up the Zemgor. They asked the Tsar if they could help in the war effort but he refused.
1915: Members of the 4th Duma and businessmen and factory owners called themselves the Progressive Bloc and demanded a constitutional government. The Tsar refused.
December 1916 to January 1917
Inflation= 300%
Moscow + Petrograd there were strikes occurring
Unemployment soaring
Thousands on the brink of starvation.
