Effects Of White Settlement On Native Americans Flashcards
What attitude did the whites and the Native Americans have towards each other?
Most of them had no respect for each other and thought violence was the answer. They were impulsive, and did not want to negotiate and learn to live in harmony around each other.
What happened at Sand Creek?
The Americans attacked Black Kettle and a big fight ensued. Children, women and men were brutally hurt. When a six-year-old Native American girl was sent out with a white flag, the Americans shot her and afterwards made it sound like they had done a great job, killing ‘900-1000 warriors’ when in fact there were much fewer Native Americans present and only a fraction were warriors.
What happened to the Native Americans when the white settlers came?
The white settlers disrupted the Native Americans’ lifestyle and treated them badly.
Why was there conflict between the Native Americans and white settlers?
When white settlers discovered America, they tried to take over in a violent and aggressive way. Also, the Native Americans were not used to ownership of the land - they were used to being able to roam freely to hunt Buffaloes. However, the white settlers quickly assigned land, so the Native Americans were forced into small pieces of land called reservations. The Native Americans did not like their treatment so they retaliated.
