- Never download and install software from the Internet unless you are certain it is from a source you can trust
- Don’t click links in websites that seem suspicious (offering prizes or free stuff)
Measures taken in order to protect against hacking
- Firewall
- Encryption
- Strong passwords
Describe the effects of information and communication technology on patterns of employment,
including areas of work where there is increased unemployment (Social effects)
Increased unemployment: - Manufacturing - Secretarial work - Accounting clerks Increased employment: - IT technicians - Computer programmers - Web designers
Advantages and disadvantages of computerising the workplace
Ad: Computers perform repetitive, menial tasks => people do not have to do boring/dangerous tasks
Disad: Distractions at workplace
Describe the effects of microprocessor-controlled devices in the home, including their effects on leisure
time, social interaction and the need to leave the home
- Entertainment \+ Games consoles \+ DVD players \+ MP3 players - Chores: \+ Ovens \+ Washing machine \+ Home security system - Effects: \+ Microprocessor-controlled devices mean that we have more leisure time to relax and enjoy ourselves instead of doing household chores \+ We are able to communicate with people very easily using computers, mobile phones + shopping online
Discuss issues relating to information found on the internet, including unreliability, undesirability and the
security of data transfer including phishing and SPAM
- Reliability of Information
+ Anyone can create web pages => +: corrupt organisations or governments, who have always been able to hide details of their activities, are no longer able to do so. -: biased info - Undesirable Information
- Phishing: name given to the sending of fraudulent e-mails that attempt to trick people into revealing details about their bank accounts, or other online accounts
- Many websites, especially online shopping or online banking sites, require you to enter personal information, such as credit card numbers, social security IDs
Describe the use of internet developments such as Web 2.0, blogs, wikis, digital media uploading
websites, and new types of social networking websites
- Web 2.0: recent development of interactive websites that are quite different to the old, static websites:
+ share information
+ interact (add comments, chat, etc.)
+ collaborate on content
+ create their own content - Blogs: personal diaries. Only authors can edit. Allow people to publish their views and opinions and readers to leave comments and begin discussions

Describe the potential health problems related to the prolonged use of ICT equipment
- Eye strain: looking at the monitor
+ Solutions: take regular breaks, adjust brightness and contrast for comfort - Back and Neck ache: sitting position/posture
+ Solutions: take regular breaks, use an adjustable, ergonomic chair - RSI in wrists and hands: typing and using a mouse for long periods
+Solutions: use a wrist-rest, take regular breaks
Describe a range of safety issues related to using computers and measures for preventing accidents
- Trailing cables: computer equipment is often connected to lots of cables (power, network)
+ Solution: Place cables inside cable ducts, or under the carpet / flooring - Split drinks/food: electric shock, damage to equipment
+ Solution: keep food/drinks away - Overloaded power sockets: plugging too many power cables => overloaded => overheating => fire
+ Solution: Never plug too many cables into a socket. Always make sure there are fire extinguishers nearby - Heavy objects falling: heavy items (CRT monitor, laser printers) can cause serious injury if they fall on people.
+ Solution: Make sure equipment is placed on strong tables / shelves
