effects of partial sleep Flashcards
sleep deprivation
described as a state caused by inadequate quantity or quality of sleep, voluntary or involuntary
partial sleep deprivation
involves having less sleep that what is normally required.
- occur periodically or persistently over short or long term
- sleep disorders are associated with partial sleep deprivation
total sleeo deprovation
involves not having any sleep at all over a short term or long term period
e.g. awake for more thank days or weeks
factors that effect partial sleep deprivation
- amount of total sleep loss
- nature of the sleep loss
- when the sleep loss occurs
- why it occurs
-frequency - period of time which sleep deprivation occurs
- personal characteristics of the individual
sleep debt
accumulated amount of sleep loss from insufficient sleep. described as the difference between the amount of sleep that is needed to function at an optimal level and the amount a person actually gets
affective functioning
- strong link between inadequate sleep adn the ability to control emotions
- compromises ability to process emotional info and regulate emotional response
- may overreact to trivial matters and have amplified emotional responses
behavioural functioning
- main effect is excessive sleepiness (sleep inertia)
- reaction time is slower (cognitive and motor functions impaired)
- can lapse into a micro sleep (brief period of sleep lasting for a few seconds)
cognitive functioning
- impacts attention, reduced alertness, learning and memory processes, ability to think clearly
- need more time to analyse and respond, may lose situational awareness, can be irrational
- performance on simple tasks is more impaired than in complex task
sleep disturbance
- refer to any sleep related problem that disrupts an individual’s normal sleep wake cycle
- including problems with sleep onset, waking form sleep and abnormal behaviour occurring during sleep
sleep disorder
- temporary, occasional or persistent
- if sleep disturbance regular disrupts sleep, causing distress or impairment in important areas of everyday life during normal waking hours, then it is usually referred to as a sleep disorder
primary vs secondary sleep disorder
- primary is when the sleep disorder that cannot be attributed to another conditioned, the sleep is not a consequence of another condition.
“ sleep disorder is the main or ‘primary’, cause of the sleep problem - secondary involves a prominent sleep problem that is a by product of another condition.
“in this case, the sleep problem is ‘secondary’ to something else - another underlying condition
