circadian rhytm sleep disorder Flashcards
define circadian rhythm sleep disorder
involves sleep disturbance that is primarily due to a mismatch between and individual’s sleep-wake pattern and the pattern that is desired or required
what are the causes of circadian rhythm sleep disorders
- a naturally occurring change or a malfunction of biological mechanisms or processes regulating the sleep-wake cycle
- a mismatch between and individual’s sleep-wake cycle and the day night cycle of their physical environemnt
-a mismatch between an individual’s sleep-wake cycle and the sleep wake schedule required by their school, work or social schedule
delayed sleep phase syndrome
- a condition in which the major sleep episode is delayed in relation to the desired sleep time or what is considered a conventional time
- tendency to sleep later and thus wake up later than what is normal
- sleep-wake cycle is significantly delayed, often by 2-3 hours
symptoms of delayed sleep phase syndrome
- tends to emrge/qorsen during adolescents and young adults and continue into early adulthood
- affects 7-15% of adolescents/young adults
shift work disorder
Night shift work in particular disrupts your biological programmed cycle and can cause shift work disorder.
- individual who are more permanent night shift are more likely to have this disorder than people who do not do shift work
- they get a reduction in sleep amount (1-4 hours lost)
- tendency to sleep twice during the day (big sleep in the morning and then a nap before going to work)
sympyoms to shift work disroder
- accumulate sleep debt
- difficult to fall asleep or maintain sleep during the day despite optimising environmental conditions (insomnia)
- difficulty with awakening and be unsatisfied with their sleep
- fragmented sleep
- excessive sleepiness is often experience during the night where they should be alert
what is bright light therapy
a method used to adjust a person’s circadian rhythm through exposure to high intensity light source
- overtime, it works to readjust the circadian rhythm, thus making their sleep - wake cycle more suitable
how does bright light therapy work
- when an individual is exposed to a light source, the suprachiasmatic nucleus will be signed, promoting wakefulness through the release of cortisol. this will then trigger an earlier release of melatonin by the pineal gland
bright light therapy to help DSPS
- exposed in the morning, act as an external cue to the SNC to promote wakefulness and signals melatonin to be released earlier
birhgt light therapy for ASPD
- exposed in the evening when feeling sleepy, help the SCN to send signals to releasse melatonin and thus promoting sleep
shift work - bright light therapy
- best to be exposed to the bright light source before beginning their shift wrk, in orer to promote wakefulness to be awake.
