Effect of tooth loss Flashcards
List causes of destruction of tooth structure
Causes include
Disease (Dental caries, tooth wear)
Trauma
Congenital (hypoplasia)
Sequels of partial loss of teeth
1-premature contact and trauma of occlusion
2-open contact and food impaction
3-pocket formation and tooth sensitivity
4-gingival recession with tooth mobility
5-mesial drifting of adjacent teeth
6-over eruption of the opposing teeth
7-caries
8-tempro-mandibular joint disturbances.
Why restore missing tooth structure
1-Restore function (mastication, speech)
2-Improve esthetic
3-Provide comfort
4-Protect remaining tooth structure
Completely edentulous patient can be restored with:
1-Conventional complete denture
2-Implant-supported overdenture
3-Implant-suported fixed prosthesis
Methods of replacement of missing teeth in partially edentulous patients
1-Removable partial denture (RPD)
a-Acrylic resin RPD
B-Cast RPD
2-Fixed partial denture (FPD)
a-Conventional tooth-supported FPD
b-Resin-bonded tooth supported FPD
c-Implant-supported FPD
Factores affecting the selection of the type of prosthesis
1-Span length
2-Span configuration
3-Abutment alignment
4-Abutment condition
5-occlusion
6-Periodontal condition
7-Ridge form
8-General features.
Indications of removable partial denture
1-Anterior span longer than 4 incisors
2-Canine and 2 or more missing teeth
3-Short clinical mobile abutment
4-No distal abutment and bilateral edentulous spaces
5-Insufficient and widely divergent abutment alignment
6-Posterior span longer than 2missing teeth
7-Gross tissue loss in residual ridge
8-Advanced age
9-Limited patient finance.
Indications of fixed partial denture
1-Posterior span for 2 or less missing teeth
2-4 incisors missing or less
3-Less than 25 degree inclination of abutment can be accommodated by
Preparation modification
4-Good abutment condition and if non vital teeth can be used if there is
sufficient coronal tooth structure.
5-Good alveolar bone support, moderate ridge resorption with no gross
Soft tissue defects.
6-No mobility, favorable root morphology.
Indication of resin-bonded bridges
1-Single tooth replacement, possible for 2 teeth anterior, one posterior
2-Abutment mesial and distal to pontic
3-favorable occlusion
4-Defect free abutment
5-Young pt.
Indication of implants
1-No distal abutment or long span
2-Single tooth or 2-6 unit span
3-Dense bone
4-Broad flat ridge
5-Occlusal force must be as nearly vertical as possible.
