Effect Of Osmotic Pressures- Lab 9 Flashcards
Describe hypotonic solution
If there are more solutes inside the cell. As water enters, the cell expands. If the cell expands too much risking of burst called osmotic lysis.
Most bacteria live in hypotonic conditions.
Describe hypertonic solutions
If there are more solutes inside the cell, water will flow out of the cell to dilute the solutes. As water leaves, the cell dehydrates in shrinks called plasmolysis.
This is used to inhibit bacterial growth.
Describe facultative halophiles
No Salt in moderate salt
NaCl up to 10% or higher
Describe obligate halophiles
High salt conditions
NaCl at least 9%
can live in saturated salt
Why did staphylococcus epidermidis have the widest range of salt tolerance
Because it’s a bacterium that lives on the salty skin
Is halobacterium salinarium an obligate halophile
Yes
Describe isotonic solution
If the concentration of solute a on the outside of a cell equals that of the inside. (Net movement of water = zero)
What condition did we address in lab?
Hypertonic
