Effect Of Osmotic Pressures- Lab 9 Flashcards

1
Q

Describe hypotonic solution

A

If there are more solutes inside the cell. As water enters, the cell expands. If the cell expands too much risking of burst called osmotic lysis.
Most bacteria live in hypotonic conditions.

Q

Describe hypertonic solutions

A

If there are more solutes inside the cell, water will flow out of the cell to dilute the solutes. As water leaves, the cell dehydrates in shrinks called plasmolysis.
This is used to inhibit bacterial growth.

Q

Describe isotonic solution
