1st line controller therapy for preventing environmental allergy symptoms:
Intranasal corticosteroids (ie fluticasone propionate aka Flonase & triamcinolone aka Nasacort) will take a few days for relief
Then an intranasal antihistamine- rapid sx relief but more costly
What is a reliever therapy for allergic rhinitis?
2nd generation oral antihistamines
Ie loratadine (Claritin), certirizine (Zyrtec), levocetirizine (Xyzal)
What type of med should be used for managing sx of allergic conjunctivitis?
Ocular antihistamine (ie olopatadine, azelastine, bepotastine)
What is presbyopia?
Age related farsightedness
What is myopia?
Nearsightedness
What is presbycusis?
Normal hearing loss with aging
Primary treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis?
Cipro eye drops
Alternative: azithromycin eye drops
Treatment for mild otitis externa?
Acetic acid with propylene glycol and hydrocortisone ear drops
Treatment for moderate to severe otitis externa?
Cipro drops with hydrocortisone or dexamethasone
First line therapy for strep throat?
Penicillin or amoxicillin
Alternative therapy for strep if penicillins are not used?
1st or 2nd gen cephalosporin
How to tx strep throat if penicillin allergy (with anaphylaxis)?
Azithromycin
Clarithromycin
Clindamycin
If tx for strep is not improving after 3-5 days prescribe:
Augmentin or Clindamycin
