EEG (Okt 15 and 22 lectures) Flashcards
What does ERP stand for?
Event-Related Potential
Who studied the electrical properties of the nervous system and found evidence for fine localization of function in the cortex (by stimulating dogs–> involuntary movement)
Gustav Fristch & Eduard Hitzig
What is David Ferrier known for?
He stimulated dogs and monkeys and located precise areas for motor control
What is Richard Caton known for?
He measured precise activity of the brain (without stimulation) in dogs–birth of EEG (1875)
Who first reported alpha supression?
Adolf Beck
Who built the first EEG?
Hans Berger (first EEG recording in man on his own son, Klaus; also first to distinguish alpha & beta waves)
Who first distinguished alpha & beta waves?
Hans Berger
Who is considered to be the “father of electroencephalography”?
Hans Berger
Who pioneered the use of EEG as a diagnostic tool (reported abnormal EEG in epilepsy)?
Frederic Gibbs
Who reported the first cognitive component (CNV)?
Grey Walter (Contingent Negative Variation, 1964) - inspired research of ERPs
Who discovered the P3 component in 1965?
Samuel Sutton
Which frequency band ranges from 30-80Hz?
Gamma
Which frequency band ranges from 14-30Hz?
Beta
Which frequency band ranges from 8-13Hz?
Alpha
Which frequency band ranges from 4-7Hz?
Theta
Which frequency band ranges from 1-4Hz?
Delta
What does EEG reflect?
Dendritic activity of synchronized neocortical pyramidal cells
What do ERPs reflect?
Brain activity relative to a given point in time (stimulus or response)
Where does the PCN wave (N2PC) originate from?
The ventral occipito-temporal cortex
What is the PCN wave hypothesized to reflect?
Attentional selection, or suppression of interference from distractors
Where does the LRP wave originate from?
Motor areas (strongest over areas contralateral to a hand/foot movement)
What is the LRP wave believed to reflect?
Preparation or activation of a motor response
Who did the first EEG recording in man?
Hans Berger (1929)
What was the first cognitive ERP component?
Contingent Negative Variation (CNV) - Grey Walter, 1964
What are the few advantages of ERP over fMRI and PET?
Excellent temporal resolution (but poor spatial), inexpensive, portable/mobile
Order the 5 frequency bands in order from lowest Hz to highest Hz.
Delta (1-4), Theta (4-7), Alpha (8-13), Beta (14-30), Gamma (30-80)
