EEB 485 Pop. Com Flashcards
What is a population?
a set of individuals of the same species concurring in space and time.
Characteristics of a population?
total number of populations
age/stage/ size structure
sex ratio
spatial distribution
What basic processes shape the population?
Births that can increase the population
Deaths reduce the size of the population
Immigration- individuals moving into that population
Emigration- Individuals moving out of the population.
What does N stand for? what does Nt stand for?
Size of the population.
Size of population at a certain time (t)
Nt+B-D+I-E
Size of population at time t+1
Nt+1-Nt = B-D+I-E
Change in population size from time 1 to t+1
Nt+1-Nt=B-D
Assuming this is a closed population.
change in population size from time t to t+1
