It initially stated that he wanted his cousin’s male heirs to take the throne when he died.

He realised he was dying and he did not have enough time so stated that Lady Jane Grey should become queen.

Edward was concerned that, if Mary took the throne, Protestantism would not continue, so Lady Jane Grey would be a suitable pick for the throne because she was a well educated Protestant.
