Edwards reign
1547-1553
“Good” Duke of Somerset
1547-49, liked by population but disliked by the gentry, poor economic policies- debasement, high taxation, sheep tax introduced, enclosure, dealt poorly with the rebellions of 1549 which led to his downfall
“Bad” Duke of Northumberland
1549-53, inherited a bankrupt country- ended expensive wars with France/Scotland (short term expense for long term prosperity) and ended debasement, involved Edward, responsible for succession- excluded Mary (Catholic), Elizabeth (not close to Edward), left Lady Jane Grey as successor (Northumberland’s daughter-in-law)- this made him vastly unpopular hence “bad”
Religion- 1547
Dissolution of the Chantries- all remaining chantries were officially closed

First Act of Uniformity- Roman Catholic Mass is illegal, all statues and icons are removed
Religion- 1549
First Book of Common Prayer- mildly Protestant- suggested transubstantiation isn’t real.

Kett’s Rebellion

Second Book of Common Prayer- far more Protestant- fully denies transubstantiation.
Second Act of Uniformity
Religion- 1553
42 Articles of Religion published- England is now officially a Protestant nation

1549, Catholic, in response to First Book of Common Prayer and Sheep Tax
Whitsunday (prayer in Latin becomes illegal), rebels besiege Exeter in July, rebels defeated at Sampford Courtenay in August.
Kett’s Rebellion
1549, Protestant, wanted faster/more radical change and opposed enclosure
In Norfolk, rebels attack Norwich in July, rebels capture the city in late August before being defeated by Northumberland.
