Educational Research and Variables Flashcards
Careful, systematic, patient study and investigation in some field of knowledge
Research
Types of Research
Basic and Applied Research
Classifying underlying processes with hypotheses usually expressed as a theory. It finds answers to questions
Basic Research
examines the effectiveness of particular educational practices. Find solutions to problems by doing something to address the problem (intervention)
Applied Research
General Types of Research
Descriptive Studies, Associational Research and Intervention studies
Describes a given state of affairs as fully and carefully as possible. A classified as a Basic Research
Descriptive Studies
It is expected to influence one or more outcomes, used as an assessment, contributes to general knowledge by confirming or failing to confirm theoretical predictions. Classified under Applied Research
Interventions Studies
Investigates possible relationships to understand phenomena more completely. Classified as a Basic Research
Associational Research
any characteristics or quality that varies among the members of a particular group
Variable
any characteristics or quality that is the same for all members of a particular group
Constant
the cause, variate: as known as explanatory or predictor variables in multilevel modeling analysis. any variable that explains the response variables
Independent Variable
The result, criterion: also known as the outcome, response, multilevel variable. is presumed to be affected by one or more independent variables. The object of the investigation.
Dependent Variable
When there is a grouping in the study, what is the basis on which grouping is made.
The independent variable
When there is grouping in the study, What is measured after grouping at the end of the study
The dependent Variable
Non Quantitative Variable
Categorical Variables
Not arranged as best to worst just general listing. Examples: Age, Name, Course
Nominal Variable
Arranged in best to worst based on criteria. Example: Rankings, Test Scores, Latin Honors
Ordinal Variables
Variables that can be quantified
Continuous or quantitative Variables
has no true zero point meaning the Zero has some sort of meaning. Examples Temperature or IQ Test
Interval Variables
has a true zero point, zero means nothing or it wasn’t done. Examples: Test Scores or weight
Ratio Variables
3 Major Types of Research
Qualitative, Quantitative and Mixed Methods Research
explores and understands the meaning of individuals or groups in a certain social or human problem. a research of words or multiple realities
qualitative research
test objective theories by examining the relationship among variables. a research of numbers or single realities
quantitative research
an approach to inquiry that combines or associates both qualitative and quantitative form
mixed methods research
