Educational Philosophies Flashcards
A philosophy of education based on the assumption that students should learn the basic facts regarding the social and physical world.
Essentialism - Teacher
Traditional approach to the practice where the teacher is the ‘sole knowledge holder’ of information.
Positivism - Teacher
The whole being, emotional and social, need to be engaged in learning, not just the mind. A teacher always responds to the content of learners’ written work, not just the quality of the language.
Humanism - Student
Focuses on objectively observable behaviors and discounts any independent activities of the mind.
Behavoirism - Teacher
A philosophy that education developed by John Dewey based on the assumption that all learning is active, that learning is intellectual, social, and emotional, and that curriculum should begin with the child’s interests and experiences.
Progressivism - Student
The belief that learning occurs as learners are actively involved in a process of meaning and knowledge construction as opposed to passively receiving information.
