Education Theories Flashcards
Durkheim
Society can only flourish if there is a strong degree of social solidarity and a value consensus. Education establishes this by transmitting norms and beliefs to all pupils. It welds together the masses and integrates people more closely into society. They do this by following standardised curriculum so all pupils are exposed to the same information regardless of gender, ethnicity or class
Hidden curriculum
All the lessons learnt in school without being directly taught simply through the everyday experience of being in school- unofficial learning E.g rules, punctuality
Relationships of authority and control
The relationship of authority and control among teachers and between teachers and students reflects the hierarchy of authority in the workplace. The fact school operates on a hierarchical principle of authority prepares individuals for work as it fosters deference to authority
Motivation by external rewards
Pupils are motivated by extrinsic rewards and satisfaction rather than from interest in the subject studied. Reflects role of wages as motivation.
Pupils expect to go to work and not be fulfilled so they don’t revolt
