What type of sociologist is parsons
Functionalist
What does parsons say about education
Education as performing two major functions in advanced industrial societies – transmitting the shared values of society and simultaneously teaching the specialised skills for an economy based on a specialised division of labour.
What type of sociologists are Bowles and Gintis
Marxists
What do Bowles and Gintis believe about education
- correspondence principle They see the education system as being subservient to and performing functions for the Bourgeoisie, the capitalist class who own the means of production: the Bourgeoisie require a workforce that is hardworking, accepts authority, and who won’t kick up a fuss if they are exploited, and the main function of school in capitalist societies is to indoctrinate children into these norms and values.
What does Lacey (1970) say about education
Pro school subcultures: accept the values and ethos of the school and willingly conform to the rules
Tend to be students in higher sets who aspire for high academic achievement + prepared to work hard
Anti school subcultures: students who rebel against the school for various reasons + develop and alternate set of delinquent values, attitudes and behaviours in opposition to the academic aims.
What does Becker think about education?
Becker said that teachers actively judge their pupils over a period of time, making judgments based on their behaviour in class, attitude to learning, previous school reports and interactions with them and their parents, and they eventually classifying their students according to whether they are ‘high’ or ‘low’ ability, ‘hard working’ or ‘lazy’, ‘naughty’ or ‘well-behaved’, ‘in need of support’ or ‘capable of just getting on with it’
A closely related concept to labelling theory is the that of the self-fulfilling prophecy – where an individual accepts their label and the label becomes true in practice – for example, a student labelled as deviant actually becomes deviant as a response to being so-labelled.
They live up to a ‘master status’
What do Rosenthal and Jacobson say about education?
self-fulfilling prophecy – where an individual accepts their label and the label becomes true in practice – for example, a student labelled as deviant actually becomes deviant as a response to being so-labelled.
Pygmalion effect:
What study did Paul Willis carry out, what did it discover?
He did a participant observation One of Willis’ most important findings was that the lads were completely uninterested in school – they saw the whole point of school as ‘having a laff’ rather than trying to get qualifications. Their approach to school was to survive it, to do as little work as possible, and to have as much fun as possible by pushing the boundaries of authority and bunking as much as they could. The reason they didn’t value education is because they anticipated getting factory jobs which didn’t require any formal qualifications.. they followed in their parents/families footsteps, “working class kid get working class jobs”
