Education - Social Class Difference In Education - Internal Factors Flashcards
Labelling
To attach meaning to someone e.g. teachers may label students as smart etc
What did Becker do to do with labelling?
-interviewed 60 high school teachers and found teacher stereotype pupils based on work and appearance
-Also found that the middle-class students was the closest to the ‘ ideal ‘ student
What did Rist to do with labelling?
-In a kindergarden Rist found that teachers used info from people his home background to place pupils in separate groups
-Each group sat on different tables
What did Keddie find to do with labelling?
She found that teachers are more likely to label children from MC backgrounds as ideal students and are treated more favourably
Self fulfilling prophecy
Prediction that comes true purely under the basis of it being made
Three stages to do with self filling prophecy
Stage 1 - teacher label student makes predictions about them in relation to the label
Stage 2 - teacher interacts with pupils based on prediction
Stage 3 - pupil internalises concept therefore will ‘ fulfil prophecy ‘

Rosenthal & Jacobson - teachers expectations and self fulfilling prophecy
-told the school that they had a test to identify who would ‘ spurt ‘ in school
-R&J selected 20% of students randomly
-those students ended up doing better than the people that weren’t selected which shows that teachers interacted with them more
Streaming
System where students are separated into 3 groups either targeted for help or not
What are the three separate groups in streaming better known as education triangle?
1- those that will pass anyway
2- borderline grade 4/5 pupils targeted for help
3-students definitely failing
More on streaming
-based heavily on stereotypes and presumption about pupils
-WC are neglected, lower streams, receive less attention, support and resources
Pupil subcultures ( groups ) , differentiation - Colin Lacey
Differentiation - categorise students based on stereotypes
Polarisation - process in which people respond to streaming by moving towards one of two opposite ‘ poles ‘. This leads to subcultures ( groups )
What are the two subcultures that polarisation lead to 2 subcultures?
Pro school subculture and anti-school subculture
Pro school subculture - pupil subcultures
- Associated with middle-class
-Positive stereotypes
-High expectations and attention span
-Positive self fulfilling prophecies
Anti-school subculture
-Associated with working class
-Negative stereotypes
-low expectations and status knowledge
-Negative self fulfilling prophecies
