What was the tripartite system?
3 types of secondary school - grammar, secondary modern & technical schools
Admission was decided by an 11+ exam
What was the pattern of student attendance to the schools in the tripartite system?
Most MC students attended the grammar school
Most WC students attended secondary modern schools
Not many students attended technical schools
When was the comprehensive system introduced?
1965
What was the comprehensive school?
It was a new school idea by Labour and meant that all students went to the same local secondary school and had access to the same opportunities
How did Gerwitz argue MC could use the comprehensive system?
He argues that the MC can use their social, economic and cultural capital to get their children into top performing comprehensive schools
What is selection by mortgage?
As schools have catchment areas it means that the areas with highest performing schools have higher house prices due to increased demand
This then forces the poorer wc parents to put their children into schools in more deprived areas
When was the education reform act?
In 1988
Who introduced the education reform act?
Margaret Thatcher
What policies where in the ERA?

How did league tables impact school admissions?
League tables meant that parents knew all of the best schools and these schools got the best admissions
This leads to these schools having over subscribed meaning they can cream skim and pick the best students
This leaves the less able students to go to worse performing schools, usually wc
As supported by Ball
