Education: Gender differences Flashcards
Girls: changes in women’s employment (external) study
the proportion of women in employment has risen from 53% in 1971 to 67% in 2013. Sharpe (1976, 1994) found that in 1976 girls’ priorities were “love, marriage and children then jobs”. But when she repeated her study in 1994, she found the priority of jobs had shifted to the main priority.
Boys: globalisation and the decline of men’s jobs. (external)
Since the 1980s there has been a decline in traditionally male jobs such as oil and steel and therefore discourage boys from gaining qualifications due to the decline in these jobs.
Teacher Pupil relationships (internal) study
Swann (1998) found differences in communication, boys would dominate class discussions where as girls preferred group or paired work. This allowed them to be seen as cooperative and boys as disruptive.
The organisation of teaching and learning (internal) study
Francis (2006) 8 year olds did not think that gender mattered, however marketization polices have meant girls are seen as more recruit-able due to potentially achieving higher grades and being more reliable where as boys are seen as a liability.
