- Wealthy son looked after by nurse
- Father took interest as got older - teaches him skills (riding / sport) and ancestors.
- Age 7: given him too paedagogus (Greek slave) who was responsible for his behaviour and taught to speak Greek

- Ludus - 5 years - 7-12 year olds
- taught by Ludi Magister
- learnt basic reading, writing and arithmetic
- practiced writing using stilus and used an abacus
- teachers used physical punishments
- relatively cheap

- no girls
- no purpose building

- no desks/classroom equipment
- boys wore tunics

- Grammaticus taught them grammar, Greek and Latin lit
- preparation for the Rhetor stage

- Taught the art of public speaking
- useful as most Roman upper class fathers would want their sons to go into politics or law

- Wealthy ones to Ludus with brothers
- learnt Greek and Latin lit with tutor at home
- learned woolwork, dancing, singing, lyre
- experienced how to run a home
- their aim was not to distinguish themselves in public life but be good wives and mothers

- Later starting age and earlier leaving age
- not compulsory
- one teacher who had no qualification
- harsh discipline
- limited curriculum
- different writing materials (stilus ect..)
- no music or art
