what does Functionalist Parsons say about education?
school is a ‘mini bridge’ that moves children along to get used to society. School and society is based on meritocratic principles
what does Functionalist Durkheim say about education?
the key role of education is to create a value consensus and social stability. education transmits norms and values to help achieve this
what do Functionalists Davis and Moore say about education?
education is to ensure people get the appropriate jobs (cream rising to the top). school performs the funtion of allocating and selecting pupils.

what do Marxists say about education?
- education prepares children for the world of work giving them skills and values employers need
- education passes on the ruling class ideology that supports capitalism
- legitimises inequality
What does Marxist Althusser say about education?
education is part of the ruling class’ ideological state apparatus (controlling people’s ideas,values and beliefs). it legitimises class inequality by persuading WC to accept their position and not question capitalism
What does Marxist’s Bowles and Gintis say about education?
education creates obedient workforce who accept inequality as inevitable. correspondence theory and hidden curriculum (school mirrors the workplace). myth of meritocracy

WC boys accept their label and create anti school subcultures (Lads and Earoles).
What do the New Right think about education?
believe the education system doesn’t meet the needs of society. school should be like a business-they need to compete whereas now they just rely on the state for pupils etc. education should provide individual choice
what was education like in the late 1800’s?
only available to MC children or WC in churches. in 1880 education became compulsory aged 5-13. education received reflected social class (MC-academic, WC-skill based for factory work)
what was the Butler Act? (1994) (tripartite system) and why was the 11+ criticized?
grammar, secondary modern, technical. allocated according to ability by 11+ (attempt at meritocracy). 11+ was bias towards MC norms and values. girls needed higher marks to pass.
