A subculture within the school which differs from the dominant behaviour

This exam is what allocated pupils into one of the tripartite system schools.

What is the private education sector
A minority’s of pupils that attend independent, fee paying schools which aren’t part of the state sector
What are education act zones
They have some additional funding but aim to support schools in vulnerable areas with expert, targeted resources
What is labelling
Labelling is when people attach a name to a social act. In education the main labeller is the teacher who then creates a self fulfilling prophecy for the students
What is a self fulfilling prophecy
When someone is labelled and they then live up to that label
What is hidden curriculum
Hidden curriculum is something that’s taught inside the school that isn’t taught directly eg punctuality
What is national curriculum
Curriculum which is taught and tested in every school in England and Wales
What is local management of schools
Lms gave schools grater control of their finances
What is open enrolment
Where parents have the opportunity to have greater choice in which school their child attends
What is differential educational achievement
The differences in educational performance of students
What is patriarchal curriculum
Feminists argue there is gender patterns within subject choices. Traditional gender based choices are predominant in post 16
What is multi cultural education
Education that raises awareness, understanding and tolerance to the range of cultures in society
What is anti racist education
Education that tackles racism itself
What is ethnocentric curriculum
Education that focuses on one dominant culture. Eg history taught in British schools usually only focuses on British history
What is material deprivation
When some groups of pupils lack the material needed to achieve high in education because of their class or where they come from etc
What is cultural deprivation
Some people claim that weaknesses in home culture can disadvantage certain social groups
What is meritocracy
Meritocracy is the idea that someone’s social status and class is the result of their personal achievement. This means that status is achieved rather than ascribed
What is cultural capital
A Marxist theory as to why middle class pupils achieve more than working class. MC pupils have an automatic advantage because they share the culture of the school
What’s the correspondence principle
Bowles and Gintis coined the term to describe the relationship between schools and the workplace. Schools correspond to the workplace by reflecting what pupils can expect in a job
What is ideological state apparatus
According to Althusser, some institutions. Including education function to incorporate all groups of society into a dominant ideology
What is role allocation
Functionalists see education as a filter of talent and ability. Pupils are sorted and sifted through the education system and channeled into an appropriate career
